Previous appointments have included command of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, 7th Armoured Brigade, Ist Armoured Division, Multinational Division South West (in Bosnia), Regional Forces (Land Command), and Deputy Commander of Multinational Forces Iraq, in Baghdad 2004-05. His staff appointments have included Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Resources and Plans). He took up his present appointment as Director of the Defence Academy in May 2005.

Mr. Landerholm was appointed the President of the Swedish National Defence College by the Swedish Cabinet in October 2002. He was a Member of the Swedish Parliament and chaired its Committee on Defence between 1998 and 2002. He was elected Member of Parliament in 1991. Between 1992 and 1994 he served as Senior Adviser to the Swedish Secretary of Defence and between 1992 and 1998 he served as a member of the Governmental Defence Committee.

Lieutenant General Lamb was granted a Regular Commission in the Queen’s Own Highlanders on 8 March 1973. He was a student on the Higher Command and Staff Course in 1996 before being promoted to Brigadier in June as Commander 5th Airborne Brigade. He was a student at the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1998 and then became Assistant Commandant (Land) at the newly configured Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham. He assumed command of the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division on promotion to Major General in June 2003. He was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1981, awarded the MBE in 1988, was made an OBE in 1991 for his services in the Gulf War and was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in 1994. He was awarded the CMG in 2003 and the DSO in 2004 following his operational tour in Iraq and assumed the duties as the Director General of the Land Warfare Centre. He promoted to Lieutenant General in 2006 on taking up the position as Deputy Commanding General Multinational Force - Iraq & Senior British Military Representative - Iraq. On 19 October 2007 he took over the post of Commander Field Army at Headquarters Land Command.

David Richards was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1971 prior to studying international relations at University College Cardiff. Graduating in 1974 he spent the next 9 years at regimental duty in the Far East, Germany and the UK (principally with 29 Commando Regiment RA and C Anti-Tank Battery Royal Horse Artillery) and on the staff of 11th Armoured Brigade in Germany. This period included 3 tours in Northern Ireland. After attending the Staff College in 1984, he returned to 11th Armoured Brigade to command a field battery in 47th Field Regiment. From there he spent 2 years in Berlin as the Chief of Staff of the Berlin Infantry Brigade. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he spent the next 3 years as an instructor at the Staff College, Camberley, before being appointed to command 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. This period included another operational tour in Northern Ireland. In 1994 he was promoted and appointed Colonel Army Plans in the MOD, responsible for the shape and size of the Army. Promoted to Brigadier in 1996, and after attending the Higher Command and Staff course, he became Commander 4th Armoured Brigade in Germany. In 1998 he was posted to the Permanent Joint Headquarters as Chief Joint Force Operations, the UK’s default one star commander for short notice expeditionary operations. In this role he was involved in a number of operations, including commanding the UK Contingent in East Timor in 1999, and twice commanding a UK Joint Task Force in Sierra Leone in 2000. Promoted to Major General, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in April 2001 before becoming Assistant Chief of the General Staff in September 2002. He assumed the appointment of Commander Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in January 2005, in which role he served as Commander of the International Stabilisation and Assistance Force Afghanistan between May 2006 and February 2007. On completion of NATO/ISAF expansion across the whole of Afghanistan in October 2006, he was promoted to General for the remainder of his time in Afghanistan. His operational awards include a Mention in Despatches, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Distinguished Service Order and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. General Sir David Richards is Honorary Colonel of 3rd Regiment RHA, Colonel Commandant Royal Artillery, Colonel Commandant Brigade of Gurkhas, Chairman Gurkha Welfare Trust and President of Army Tennis. A keen student of military history, he is also a qualified offshore yachtsman – he is Admiral of the Army Sailing Association and of the British Kiel Yacht Club - a Governor of his old School, an occasional horseman and an unskilled but hard working gardener. He became Commander in Chief Land Command on 1 February 2008.

Chris Parry read Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford. He joined the Royal Navy as a Seaman officer and subsequently sub-specialised as a Sea King, Wessex and Lynx Observer, operating from carriers and surface combatants. He was mentioned in despatches during the Falklands war and received the 1983 Prince Philip Helicopter Rescue Award from the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. He was promoted Commander in 1989 and, commanded the air defence destroyer HMS GLOUCESTER from 1994 to 1996. On promotion to Captain, he commanded the Maritime Warfare Centre from 1996 to 1998 and was responsible for the teaching and evolution of Joint and maritime doctrine, tactical development and operational analysis. He returned to sea in January 2000 in command of HMS FEARLESS and as Flag Captain to the Amphibious Task Group. From April 2001, as a Commodore and as Director Operational Capability in the Ministry of Defence, he was directly responsible to Ministers and the Chiefs of Staff fort lessons from operations. In September 2003, he took command of the UK’s Amphibious Task Group and NATO’s UK/Netherlands Amphibious Task Group. He started his appointment which became Director General Development, Concepts and Doctrine in 2005.

Cecilia Malmstrom launched her political career with a Ph D in Political Science from Goteborg University, Sweden. Having been a psychiatric nurse, and a social studies teacher she became a member of the Swedish Liberal Party Board in 1999. She became a Member of the European Parliament and was appointed a member of the European Parliament Committee of Foreign Affairs and Member of the European Parliament Committe on Human Rights. She is a substitute member of the European Parliament Sub-committee on Security and Defence. She has authored a book on terrorism and immigration among other topics.

Neal A. Pollard is a senior officer at the US National Counterterrorism Center, where he entered on duty as an International Affairs Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has over fourteen years of experience in policy, strategy, technology, and operational planning for counterterrorism. He is Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University, where he teaches graduate courses at the Medical Center, the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, and the Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previously, he was Board Director and General Counsel of the Terrorism Research Center, Inc., a corporation he founded in 1996. He was also Vice President of Hicks & Associates, Inc. He holds degrees in mathematics and polical science, a Master of Letters from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and a Juris Doctor cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, admitted to the Virginia Bar, and a native Oklahoman.

Lieutenant Colonel John A. Nagl commands the 1st Battalion of the 34th Armored Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas, training Transition Teams that embed with Iraqi and Afghan Security Forces. He led a tank platoon in Operation Desert Storm and served as the Operations Officer of Task Force 1-34 Armor in Al Anbar, Iraq in 2003 and 2004. Nagl is a West Point graduate and a Rhodes Scholar with a D.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford University who taught National Security Studies at West Point. He served as a Military Assistant to Deputy Secretaries of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Gordon England. Nagl is the author of Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife (University of Chicago Press, 2005) and was on the writing team that produced Field Manual 3-24, Counterinsurgency. He is a frequent commentator on National Public Radio who has appeared on the Charlie Rose Show and on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Lars Nicander is Director for the Centre for Asymmetric Threat Studies at The Swedish National Defence College. He was also between 1997-2002 appointed Secretary of the Cabinet Working-Group on Defensive Information Operations and Critical Infrastructure Protection. He is a political scientist and has served in various positions within the Swedish national security environment during the last 20 years. For many years he has been an elected member of the Institute of Strategic Studies in London (IISS), a Fellow of The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and member of the Board of Advisors to The Terrorism Research Center Inc., McLean, Virginia.

Dr Magnus Ranstorp is the Research Director of the Centre for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defence College, directing a large funded project on Strategic Terrorist Threats to Europe which focuses on both radicalisation and recruitment of salafist-jihadist terrorists across Europe and the critical issue of the convergence between CBRN and terrorism. He is internationally recognised as a leading expert on Hizballah, Hamas, al-Qaeda and other militant Islamic movements. He has conducted extensive field work around the world, interviewing hundreds of terrorists as well as members of militant Islamic movements. Dr Ranstorp has briefed many senior government and security officials from around the world and lectures regularly to most major universities, think tanks and intergovernmental organisations. In 2003, he was invited to testify before the 9-11 Commission in its first hearing. In 2006 Dr Ranstorp was invited to join the European Commission Expert Group on Violent Radicalisation, an official advisory body on all matters relating to violent radicalisation and recruitment of extremists within the EU.

Gregory Treverton is director of the RAND Corporation’s Center for Global Risk and Security. Earlier, he directed RAND’s Intelligence Policy Center and its International Security and Defense Policy Center, and he was associate dean of the Pardee RAND Graduate School. His recent work has examined at terrorism, intelligence and law enforcement, with a special interest in new forms of public-private partnership. He has served in government for the first Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, handling Europe for the National Security Council and, most recently as vice chair of the National Intelligence Council, overseeing the writing of America's National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs). He holds an A. B. summa cum laude from Princeton University and an M.P.P (Master's in Public Policy) and Ph.D. in economics and politics from Harvard. Dr Sookhdeo was born in Guyana, South America, and is now based in the UK. He holds a Ph.D. from London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies on the impact of Islam on society. He also holds doctorates from Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon and Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary, Wisconsin. He is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Defence Academy of the UK, Adjunct Professor of the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies, and Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University, UK. He is an author, lecturer, advisor and consultant on issues of war, conflict, society and religion. He is an adviser to the British armed forces on Iraq and Afghanistan. His latest book is “Global Jihad: The Future in the Face of Militant Islam”.

Nigel Inkster served in the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) from 1975 to 2006. He was posted in Asia, Latin America and Europe and worked extensively on transnational issues. He spent seven years on the Board of SIS, the last two as Assistant Chief and Director for Operations and Intelligence. He is a Chinese speaker and graduated in Oriental Studies from St John’s College Oxford. Responsibilities: Analysis of international political risk and development of programmes on counter terrorism, international crime, proliferation of CBRN, cross-border conflict and other transnational/global issues. Nigel is also responsible for the IISS Armed Conflict Database.

Malcolm Baker is a Superintendent with the Metropolitan Police Service Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) where he is Head of Protective Security & Organisational Learning. He joined the MPS in 1981 and his current responsibilities include the provision of counter terrorism security advice to the business sector as well as being responsible for contingency planning, exercises and counter terrorist search within the Metropolitan Police. He is also Business Continuity Manager for the CT Command. Malcolm Baker is an Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Security and Defence Studies in Whitehall and a regular conference speaker both within the UK and abroad. He is currently working on 2 strands within Specialist Operations for the London 2012 Olympic Games, the coordination of the national search strategy and engagement with the private sector to enhance CT security.

Paul Cornish was educated at the University of St Andrews, the London School of Economics, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and the University of Cambridge. He served in the British Army from 1983-89 and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1991-93. He joined Chatham House in 1993 as a Senior Research Fellow, lectured in Defence Studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College from 1997-98, and taught International Relations at the University of Cambridge from 1998-2001. After three years directing the Centre for Defence Studies at King’s College London, Dr Cornish returned to Chatham House in May 2005, to his current appointment. He has advised UK government, NATO, the EU and the private sector, is a frequent commentator in the media, and has published and lectured widely. Recent publications include The Conflict in Iraq, 2003 (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2004), The UK Contribution to the G8 Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction (Chatham House, 2007), and The CBRN System: Assessing the Threat of Terrorist Use of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Weapons in the United Kingdom (Chatham House, 2007).

Professor Michael Clarke is currently the Director of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies. Until July 2007 he was the Deputy Vice-Principal and Director of Research Development at King’s College London, where he remains a Visiting Professor of Defence Studies. He was the founding Director of the International Policy Institute at King’s College London from 2001-2005 and Head of the School of Social Science and Public Policy at KCL in 2004-05. He was, from 1990 to 2001, the founding Director of the Centre for Defence Studies at King’s. He was appointed as Professor of Defence Studies in 1995. He has previously taught International politics at the Universities of Aberystwyth, Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne, and also at the University of New Brunswick, and the Open University. He lectures regularly at many universities in the UK, as well as at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, at the Royal College of Defence Studies, at the NATO School in Oberammagau and at the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands. He has been a Guest Fellow at The Brookings Institution, Washington, DC, and a Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. He has been Senior Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Defence Committee since 1997, having served previously with the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee 1995-7, and on the High Level Group of Experts to advise Commissioner Van den Broek at the European Commission 1996-7. In 2004 he was appointed the UK member of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, and was also elected to the Council of the Royal Institute of International Affairs. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva. In 2007 he was appointed as one of the Security Commissioners at the Institute for Public Policy Research, under the chairmanship of Lords Ashdown and Robertson.

Paul Schulte was educated at London University and has served in the UK Ministry of Defence, the Northern Ireland Office, the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and the UK's interdepartmental Post-Conflict Reconstruction Unit, which he set up, in 2004. He has twice been a UN Commissioner for Iraqi Disarmament and his MoD responsibilities have included: Commitments policy for the Middle East, Land Systems Procurement, Defence Medical matters, the handling of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Gulf War Syndrome allegations, a large scale public study to assess UK Armed Forces policy on Homosexuality and the Directorate of Proliferation and Arms Control. He is a former Fellow of the Weatherhead Centre for International Affairs and is currently Senior Associate Fellow in a the Advanced Research and Assessment Group of the UK Defence Academy and Senior Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Global Governance at the London School Economics. He is a qualified group psychotherapist and practised part-time for over 10 years at Guys Hospital London. In recent years he has published various articles and chapters on Arms Control, Terrorist Psychodynamics, and Just War In the 21st-Century.

Till May 2007 the Head of the National Judicial Anti Terrorist Division located in Paris composed of 7 specialized judges in charge of investigating terrorism cases. After the collapse of the Communist World, he has investigated all the cases relating to radical islamist organisation especially Al Qaida. He has worked in close connection with French and foreign law enforcement agencies as well as intelligence services. In 1995 he was nominated First Vice President in charge of coordinating the anti-terrorist section in Paris. From 1994, he mostly dealt with all the investigations concerning radical Islamism, in particular Al-Qaeda (hijacking of an Air France Airbus in 1994, attacks in 1995, dismantling of Al-Qaeda cells, Aghani networks, Ressam-Millenium Bomber network. and more recently Iraqi network and has been also involved in the cases relating to the September 11 attacks and the Djerba Bombing) He also dealt with enquiries into separatist organizations acting from abroad (IRA, PKK and LTTE). From 1995 he lead and coordinated the anti-terrorist section constituted of 8 specialized magistrates with national and international competence and promoted a strong relationship with his counterparts as well as intelligence agencies in the world especially in the United States. Mister Jean-Louis Bruguière is an officer of the Legion of Honour and an officer of the National Merit. He has also been awarded the Silver Medal of the Spanish Guardia Civil and won the “Prix Diagola” 2007 from Spain.

Born 1975, is the son of a Christian Jordanian father and a German mother. He was born and raised in Germany. He studied Arabic and Political Sciences at the Universities of Goettingen (Germany) and Bir Zeit (Palestinian Territories). During his studies he started working as a journalist with a focus on the Middle East and the integration of Muslim minorities in Germany. He was appointed as Director Defence Studies (Army) and was Deputy Director of the Defence Leadership and Management Centre within the Defence Academy. He took up his current appointment as Director of Security Studies and Resilience within the Defence College of Management and Technology on 1 July 2005.

Sir David Omand was first UK Security and Intelligence Coordinator as Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office, responsible for the professional health of the intelligence community, national counter-terrorism strategy and “homeland security”. He was the Government’s chief crisis manager for civil contingencies. He served in total for seven years on the UK’s Joint Intelligence Committee. He was previously Permanent Secretary of the Home Office, Director of GCHQ, and MOD Policy Director. He has dealt with long term defence strategy, British nuclear deterrence policy at the end of the Cold War and was particularly concerned with the British military contribution in restoring peace in the former Yugoslavia. Earlier in his career he was Principal Private Secretary to the Defence Secretary during the Falklands conflict and has also served as UK Defence Counsellor to NATO. He is Visiting Professor at the War Studies Department, King’s College London.

Sebestyen L. v. Gorka is an internationally recognised and published specialist on political violence, terrorism and international security, being regularly cited by Defense News, the Financial Times, the BBC, REUTERS and the Times of London, among others. He is the founding Director of the Institute for Transitional Democracy and International Security (www.itdis.org) and Adjunct Professor for Terrorism and Security Studies of the George C. Marshall Center. In addition, he is guest lecturer at the US Special Operations University in Florida. In the past, he has worked for the RAND Corporation in Washington, he has been the Kokklais Fellow in public policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an anti-terrorism consultant to the oil company Shell. Since 1995, he has been a regular contributor to the JANES Group of the UK (JANES Intelligence Review, JANES Terrorism Monitor, and JANES Islamic Affairs Analyst.) Benson accepted the position of COO after successfully leading the company’s Technical Services team and establishing the technical vision as CTO. Projects he has led include: creation of a global retail platform handling inventory management, online ordering and fulfillment, and customer service; delivery of a globalized high transaction rate, deeply integrated financial management platform; and customization and delivery of an enterprise-class customer service e-mail management tool into multiple countries. Prior to Basis Technology, Benson held technical and management positions at Kendall Square Research, Symbolics, Object Design, and Honeywell Information Systems. Benson holds a degree in Computer Science from MIT.

Colin Burrows completed over 31 years police service in Northern Ireland. At the time of his retirement he was the Acting Assistant Chief Constable - Operational Support. He was awarded the Queens Police Medal in 1991. In 1992, he gained a Master of Philosophy degree, the title of his thesis was 'The Use of Lethal Force by Police'. His service in Northern Ireland has provided him with first hand experience of crowd dynamics in situations of serious public disorder and within a context of terrorist violence. In addition to operational posting his service with the Royal Ulster Constabulary included responsibility for operational training, policy development and strategic management. Specialist roles included a four year secondment to the Home Office Police Scientific Development Branch. Upon retirement from the police service he was appointed as a ‘Specialist Advisor’ to the United Kingdom’s Government led programme on the development of less lethal weapons and the management of conflict.

Ed Husain is author of the highly-acclaimed book, 'The Islamist'. He is Deputy Director of The Quilliam Foundation, a think-tank specialising in countering Islamist ideology. Ed has travelled across the Middle East and worked for the British Council in Damascus and Jeddah between 2003 and 2006. He has an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is also pursuing doctoral studies at SOAS. Ed is a regular contributor to the British and global media on issues relating to extremism, liberty, multiculturalism, and Muslim-related issues.

Edwin Bakker is head of the Clingendael Security and Conflict Program of Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’. Edwin has a research interest in terrorism and violent radicalisation. Before joining Clingendael he was lecturering at the Centre for International Conflict Analysis & Management of the Radboud University of Nijmegen. His academic career started at the University of Groningen where he conducted a PhD research on ethnic conflicts in Central Europe. In addition to his research activities, Edwin Bakker has been active in various NGOs, among others as member of the board of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee, and member of the committee of the Netherlands Intelligence Studies Association. He is also editor of the academic journal ‘Vrede & Veiligheid’ (Peace & Security), the International journal ‘Helsinki Monitor. Quarterly on Security and Cooperation in Europe’, and the ‘Internationale Spectator’, a monthly of the Clingendael Institute.

Since then he has been instrumental in developing Arup’s security consultancy skills and services around the globe. He has contributed on blast effects to television programmes.

Alasdair Rodgers is the practice head of the Geomatics group within Arup Security Consulting. Alasdair has been with Arup for just over a year now, having joined from QinetiQ where he was the Programme Director for the Security and Intelligence Division. Alasdair was educated at Sheffield, Leeds and Cranfield universities and was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals for 16 years during which he time he had extensive experience of operations in Northern Ireland and in working as weapons staff officer within the Defence Procurement Agency. He left the Army in 2000 and went into mainstream management consultancy working on extensive assignments for BAE SYSTEMS, BT and for local and national government agencies. He was recruited into QinetiQ to restructure their consulting business and prepare the company for IPO, and is now focused on developing security consulting propositions based upon synthetic 3D modelling, Immersive Surveillance and the use of modern surveying techniques and GIS.

After graduating from the University of Manchester in Russian Studies, Chris taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for three years before helping to establish the Soviet Studies Research Centre, which he later rose to head. In 1989 he became Special Adviser to the NATO Secretary General, serving four Secretaries General in that position. He joined the Defence Academy of the UK in August 2003, responsible for developing the non-technical research process. He set up and, until April 2007, headed the Defence Academy’s Advanced Research and Assessment Group. He is now The Senior Fellow of the Defence Academy. He has also (since Oct 2006) begun to work as co-Director of the newly formed Institute for Statecraft and Governance, based in Oxford. A former officer in the Territorial Army, Chris initially specialised in the study of Soviet and Warsaw Pact defence systems. After the fall of the Berlin Wall he was closely involved in the reform of the newly emerging democracies in Central and Eastern Europe. For the last eight years his area of particular interest has been new security threats and responses. Chris has written three books and many articles on Russian and Eastern European defence and security issues.

After the collapse of the Communist World, he has investigated all the cases relating to radical islamist organisation especially Al Qaida. He has worked in close connection with French and foreign law enforcement agencies as well as intelligence services. In 1995 he was nominated First Vice President in charge of coordinating the anti-terrorist section in Paris. From 1994, he mostly dealt with all the investigations concerning radical Islamism, in particular Al-Qaeda (hijacking of an Air France Airbus in 1994, attacks in 1995, dismantling of Al-Qaeda cells, Aghani networks, Ressam-Millenium Bomber network. and more recently Iraqi network and has been also involved in the cases relating to the September 11 attacks and the Djerba Bombing) He also dealt with enquiries into separatist organizations acting from abroad (IRA, PKK and LTTE). From 1995 he lead and coordinated the anti-terrorist section constituted of 8 specialized magistrates with national and international competence and promoted a strong relationship with his counterparts as well as intelligence agencies in the world especially in the United States. Mister Jean-Louis Bruguière is an officer of the Legion of Honour and an officer of the National Merit. He has also been awarded the Silver Medal of the Spanish Guardia Civil and won the “Prix Diagola” 2007 from Spain.

He is the author of the book "File System Forensic Analysis" and developer of several open source digital forensic analysis tools, including The Sleuth Kit and the Autopsy Forensic Browser. Brian has a Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University and worked previously for @stake as a research scientist and the technical lead for their digital forensic labs response team. Brian is on the committees of many conferences, workshops and technical working groups, including the Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) and the Digital Investigation Journal
